Dog Breeding For Beginners

First off, there's always a first time for everything, and dog breeding is no different. Always remember that successful dog breeders were once complete beginners like yourself. So don't be put off by the challenges that you are going to have to face.

If you have the passion and the determination, you can certainly become successful at dog breeding too. And should you wish, you could make a lot of money in the dog breeding business. It really depends on what you're in it for.

If its purely for personal, non-business reasons - e.g. to breed more puppies at home or to give puppies to relatives- it is a great hobby. But that is what it is, a hobby.

For those of you who want to get into dog breeding as a business, you need to get yourself a permit. In some states, the law requires dog breeders to get kennel permits, but in other states, they don't.

For complete legal protection, your best course of action is to get a dog breeder's permit just in case you run into problems; like a neighbor complaining about dogs barking through the night. You'll be protected if you have a permit, but without it, you might be in trouble.

Dog breeding can be really tough, especially for beginners like you. You need to invest money, time, and a lot of effort. Don't dive into something that you hardly know anything about. The most important thing at this stage is to faithfully do your research. And you need to do a lot of dog breeding research if you want to be successful.

Once you have some knowledge in dog breeding, you should then consult an expert dog breeder. Visit his or her place and see how they do things. Learn as much as you can from them. In this way, you can get a more 'hands on' feel for dog breeding through their experience.

A great way to start is with a two year old female dog. This is the perfect time for breeding since she is already capable of caring for and looking after her puppies. Ensure that the female dog is fully registered and the best in her breed. She should be without any genetic defects at all and have no health problems.

You then need to get a suitable stud. You can either buy a stud, or, pay a fee to have access to a stud, which many dog breeding beginners opt for. Reputable and popular dog breeds are expensive, but, if you want to produce good looking puppies, you want to select only experienced studs.

Check out the local kennel club in your area. Look for the certification of the dog and after making clear arrangements with the owner, you can now bring your female dog to the stud for mating. It is better to bring the female to the stud so that the stud owner can use their expertise in the mating process. First time females can be very troublesome, so you need the owner's expert help.

Being a dog breeding beginner need not be as daunting as it seems at first. But you must do your research, ask the right questions, and learn as much as you can, especially from other reputable breeders and vets. Once you start breeding, it is a very rewarding experience.

Nothing beats seeing the happy faces of the new owners of your gorgeous puppies when they leave your place. Remember though, learn as much as you can about dog breeding before you begin diving in. And with the knowledge you have learned and the help of expert breeders and vets, you will definitely succeed as a breeder.
